PHA and LHA in Korean Skincare: The Gentle Exfoliation Wave Capturing Sensitive Skin Consumers

The exfoliating-acid category in Korean skincare is undergoing its first real generational change since glycolic acid arrived in the 1990s. AHA and BHA — the workhorses of texture renewal — are being quietly supplemented and, in sensitive-skin segments, replaced by a newer family: polyhydroxy acids (PHA) and lipohydroxy acid (LHA). Olive Young’s 2026 release calendar makes this shift impossible to miss, and the consumer drivers behind it are structural rather than cyclical.

Why a New Generation of Acids Now

The Korean consumer’s relationship with skincare has been pulled in two directions over the past five years. On one hand, demand for visible, measurable results has pushed actives to higher concentrations. On the other hand, sensitive, compromised, and barrier-disrupted skin types have grown sharply — a combination of climate stress, layered routines that disrupt the barrier, and a more medically literate consumer who self-identifies as “skin barrier compromised.”

Conventional AHAs (glycolic, lactic) and BHAs (salicylic) deliver results but produce stinging, redness, and flakiness in a population that no longer tolerates those effects. PHA and LHA solve this by changing the molecular architecture of how the acid interacts with the skin.

PHA — Polyhydroxy Acids. Gluconolactone and lactobionic acid are the two most common PHAs in Korean formulations. Their molecular size is significantly larger than glycolic acid, which means slower, more superficial penetration. The exfoliating mechanism is the same — loosening corneocyte adhesion at the surface — but the irritation profile is dramatically lower. As a bonus, both molecules are humectants in their own right and have measurable antioxidant activity.

LHA — Lipohydroxy Acid (capryloyl salicylic acid). LHA is a derivative of salicylic acid with a fatty chain attached. The fatty chain slows penetration into the pore lining, producing a more targeted exfoliation than BHA. LHA tends to be the choice when a formulator wants pore-clearing performance without the broad-spectrum dryness that traditional salicylic acid can cause.

The Olive Young Signal

Olive Young’s role in Korean skincare cannot be overstated: it is the merchandising filter that determines which ingredients consumers actually encounter at scale. Over the past 12 months, Olive Young’s new-launch pipeline has shown a clear pattern: multiple SKUs across Numbuzin, Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab, and indie labels are featuring PHA and LHA as hero ingredients, not as supporting actives.

When a category shift shows up in Olive Young’s launches at this density, it is no longer an experimental phase — it is a category being built into the consumer’s vocabulary. The brands that have PHA/LHA SKUs ready will participate in that category formation. The brands that are still leaning on glycolic acid will be re-pitching consumers who have already moved on.

Formulation and Sourcing Considerations

For OEM/ODM buyers evaluating Korean partners on PHA/LHA formulations, the technical landscape is more nuanced than the AHA/BHA generation:

pH window matters more. PHAs are gentler than AHAs but their exfoliating mechanism still depends on free-acid form, which means pH targeting between 3.5 and 4.5 is critical. Above 4.5, the molecule is mostly inactive; below 3.5, you have given up the gentleness advantage. Korean formulators have refined this window better than most international labs.

LHA is concentration-sensitive. Effective LHA performance starts around 0.3% and peaks near 2%. Below 0.3% you have a marketing claim with limited functional effect. Above 2% you re-introduce irritation. Korean OEM partners should be able to provide stability data at their proposed concentration, not just supplier certificates.

Stacking with niacinamide and ceramides. The dominant pattern in successful Korean PHA/LHA launches is to stack the acid with a barrier-repair partner — typically a ceramide complex or panthenol — in the same formulation. The two-step routine (acid then barrier cream) is being collapsed into a single SKU. Buyers should ask to see this co-formulation experience explicitly.

Where the Category Is Heading

PHA and LHA are not going to displace AHA and BHA entirely. The legacy acids will remain the workhorse for body care, acne-targeted treatments, and consumers who specifically want intensive resurfacing. But the leading edge of facial skincare — the part that defines premium positioning and Olive Young shelf placement — is moving to gentler acids paired with barrier support.

For 2027 product roadmaps, every Korean OEM/ODM portfolio should include at least one PHA-hero SKU and one LHA-targeted SKU. Brands that build these now will have credible answers when consumers ask why their exfoliating product does not sting. Brands that wait will be answering a question that already has an obvious winner on the shelf.
